Another thread got me thinking about miniatures...

I have decided to make a 1/4 scale 'copy' of my Cold Steel Frontier Hawk!!!

So far, I have the 'block' of steel (2 x 1 x 1/2"), and am preparing to fabricate the hole for the haft... I am planning on using a 1/2" hardwood dowel from Lowe's for the haft, and intend to have the 1/4 scale haft have its 'egg shaped' profile just like the full-sized one does. I intend to make it look just like the full-sized one that I modified with the 'Charcoal Wash' finish, but 1/4 scale...

If I can get 'Photobucket' to behave correctly, I will post pictures as I proceed...

Brother vec,

Here is the Cold Steel Frontier Hawk I recently refinished, it is the hawk I intend to copy when I make the 1/4 scale miniature...

And here is what I have done so far, just a block of steel with a pilot hole where the haft eventually will be...

This sounds really cool and pretty original as well. I definitely know I'm looking forward to seeing your progress!

Progress is likely to be a bit slow... don't want to mess it up...

I promise to post updates...

OK, more pictures...
I realized that the block of steel I have for the head of the Miniature Frontier Hawk is 1/2 inch too long... so I cut it down...
The following picture shows the head after being cut shorter, and below it is an actual 1/4 size image of what the head should look like, and below that is a Quarter for size comparison...

This next picture shows the head next to the wood I am planning on using for the haft... I took an extra Cold Steel Frontier Hawk haft I had that I cut wrong during another project, and cut-off a roughly 7-inch long section, and then cut it length-wise down the center. The final step was to 'round' it using a belt sander to the shape you see here. This 'haft' wood is 7 inches long, and approximately 1/2 inch in diameter... it is much longer and fatter than it will be, which is about 4 3/4 inches long, with an average diameter around 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch. The haft (like the full-sized haft) will be 'egg-shaped' in cross-section, as well as tapered...

I wanted the haft made from the same wood as a full-sized one...

More progress...

The head is now about 80% to the correct shape as viewed from the top/bottom...

The haft is also about 80% to its correct shape as well...

I will post updated pictures ASAP...

OK... I stenciled the 'profile' of the hawk head onto the side of the block of steel...
Next step will be to remove the metal up to the edges of the painted area...

And we all know that the quarter is for size comparison...

I sure hope this turns out right!!!

OK, most of the metal has been removed up to the 'stenciled' profile , perhaps a 90% job at this point...

I don't want to go any further, though; and I also don't want to 'round' the back portion of the head yet... until I get the right shape/size for the hole through the head perfect first...

The hole for the haft is round still at this point... it needs to be 'egg-shaped' (small side toward the blade), and the hole needs to get smaller as it goes from the top of the head to the bottom...

The haft is only 'rough-shaped' at this point, too big around as well as too long... I am saving it for last...
