I have a profiled knife in 1/4" ladder pattern Damascus. I need to get it down to 1/8" removing an equal amount from each side.

Is anyone capable of doing this, or know of anyone? Obviously I will pay any necessary fees.

If that's not a logical path, can anyone offer up some suggestions? My tools are very limited ATM.

My advice is to buy some 1/8" Ladder Damascus and use the 1/4" for a thicker knife. For the money spent to surface grind it you can probably get some nice 1/8th" steel. Just a thought. Good luck.

Yep. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it might cost you more than the blank is worth, to have half of it turned into dust. You can certainly have it done if you find the right shop or individual to do it for you, but when all is said and done, you might have been better off to start with another blank that is the right thickness to begin with.

I totally agree with the posts above.

but

your profile lists "AFB" - an air force base? - surely there is someone there in a maintenance shop who will run a surface grinder for beer.

That would be ALOT of beer to grind 1/8 material off.. Not cheap domestic beer either!

I would agree with the other opinions of buying another piece and save the 1/4 for another blade. Ashame to ruin a good piece??

If you had let someone like me do it before profiling it (square stock) I could have planed it down with a big face mill and got it pretty good and flat. Now that's profiled that is less practical.
