I see harbor freight has the dremel 1" grinder on sale. It has a belt and a disk grinder attached. I have a grizzly on order but I was wondering if a 1" grinder might not be useful for fine work, say for grinding around grooves around the handle. Or would I just be wasting my money?

I use a 1" grinder for handle work. It allows me a lot of lattitude in doing grooves and fitting around the guards. I found it to be a great investment.

I bought a 1 x 30" delta as my first step up from hand tools. It isn't much good for grinding bevels but it is great for handles and finishing work. Now you could split a belt or buy 1" belts for the bigger machines but what I like here is the low power. It's easier to control. I also like the 5" disc because its greatly reduced speed doesn't burn wood. Also my 8" disc threatens to rip rough stock off the magnet if I put any pressure on when I'm removing the 'bark' from ATS34. The little disc is easier to control there too.

I'm still new at this but I've had three shop tours of experienced makers and all had a 1" belt sander. "Just Do It!"

i use a drum sander for small curves in handles, but the 1" belt sander workes great for handles.
i own one also, and i'm making another grinder for grinding bevels and finishing blades, one with a 3"x132" belt.

Everyone so far seems pretty positive about a 1" grinder so I decided to order one. I called up Harbor Freight and lo and behold, they were just joshin' 'bout that 59.99 dremel. So...I'm still in the market. Any suggestions? I want both the 1" sander and a disk. Is delta the way to go? They seem reasonably priced.

Check them out at a home improvement store (lowes, home depot, any where like that) Chances are they will have the delta. I got my delta 4x36 with a 6" disc for about $100 at lowes. I'm pretty sure the 1x30 sander would be about the same. Delta makes good tools too. I've been very happy with everything I've bought thats by delta.
If you can, look for belts that say they use an a brasive called silicon carbide. Most of the cheapy belts that fit smaller tools like those are aluminum oxide which wear out pretty fast when you start grinding on metal with them. It wouldn't be as bad if its only for handles, but even then its going to make some contact with steel. you could look into custom belts too that use better abrasives, but I'm pretty suire if you get them from a hardware store they will either be silicon carbide, which is pretty good stuff, or aluminum oxide which is ok stuff.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

Matt, you are reading my mind. About an hour ago I called the local home depot and they have a 1" delta with a 5" disk for $78.

I plan to bop over there sometime this week and get one.

Thanks everyone for your help and sugestions.
