What can you get for $1?

From my local Dollar Tree store - so (obviously) just $1 - a 5" utility knife. They had versions with full tang rivetted handles - but the blade was just a plain thin piece of steel with a final edge. This has a secondary bevel making the knife thinner toward the cutting edge - but even with that the edge is not that thin - that (fairly wide) final edge bevel is almost exactly the angle of my SharpMaker (older single angle style) which I think is about 22.5deg per side.

But for a dollar this is not bad at all, it does sharpen up quite nicely and initial impressions is that it cuts well, since the blade stock is thin. Handle is comfortable.

At the local store they had other knives in the series - including an 8" carving knife (yes, $1) and a cute 3" paring knife that looks very handy. There is also an 8" chef's knife but they didn't have that in stock.

Check out the local Dollar stores - even if this isn't really a first class kitchen knife - for the price it could be used as a junker knife........

How long is the tang inside that handle? If it's a quarter inch long (as I suspect) it's going to break, likely within the first couple of days of using it.

You can get a usable little kitchen knife for around $5 or so, but for $1 ... I am suspicious. I suggest using it a bit before you praise it much.

OK, as mentioned they had the same brand and size utility knife with a FULL TANGed rivetted handles - I chose not to buy that because of the grind (or lack of), of course this may not indicate anything about the version I bought.

This is no guarantee of the length of the tang (short of destroying it to satisfy someone else's curiosity) - but I flexed the blade by more than I normally would (since the blade stock is thin-ish) - the knife showed no signs of distress. I also tapped the handle and the blade to try to hear and feel by vibration the length of the tang - from doing this non-scientific "test" it seems that the tang may extend as least as far as the bulbous part of the handle ie: more than half the handle length - like I said this is just guess-work and not proof of anything.

Like anyone else - I like to think I'm not dumb enough to buy rubbish, even if it's cheap.....
of course you may have a very low opinion of me anyway.......... :o

I'm not exactly praising or defending it - just that it seems amazing value -
and (so far) seems OK ..........
for a buck :D

That's pretty kick-arse. Be sure to keep us posted on its performance.
And hey, at least it's not Pakistani, right? ;)
