$1 knife sharpning with an 120 to 30.000 whetstone`s

Not terribly. You can sharpen any steel like that. (Or just about any material for that matter...a hunk of lead for instance).

How long it retains the edge is another story.

Seems to be a common thing:

At least Jun lets the cats watch.

Those guys in both vids go through more than $1 of stone wear on those nice Shaptons for those cheap knives.

Very true, I’ll sharpen some of my friends knives to hair splitting edges only to se them butter knife dull in a few days. I have since learned to take less time on the cheap stuff as the edges fade ridiculously fast.

That guy has some reall skill and patience to spend 8 hrs on a 1$ knife. That edge was beautiful. I like how he striped it on his apron at the end ha ha.

Wow, he definitely gave that knife a beautiful edge.
Way more effort than the $1 knife is worth.

You can sharpen the back of a spoon to the same sharpness, but like this knife steel it will be dull after a few dozen slices of lettuce.

What i loved was the time and the sheer number of grits he used and love this guy spent on an $1 knife(at the end he was dabbing the edge with a bit oil before the final sharpen, the amazing looking edge all done by hand, I am always totally amazed how you can hold such a consistent angle by hand when i am totally useless at it.

Yes...that is what everybody said. So what, to you, made the video interesting? I'm confused.

You could chop 2 by 4s with a $3000 sushi knife too.

It was interesting to me and i though i would share, I have seen many many stone sharping video`s but this was the best i have seen, It was not really about the 1$ knife as you and i have said you can sharpen virtually anything.

I see. I was going by you saying

Interesting to watch the sharpening process for a $1 knife.

It is always interesting to watch someone good at freehand sharpening.

Someone who can freehand their knives like that make me feel like a plebeian when it comes to sharpening, haha. Sure I can get a pretty edge that does the job, but I can't do that quite yet.

I sharpen cheap machetes like that. Start with a concrete block and move on to a finer stone, like a patio paver.
