Two questions for you experienced guys:

1. I am playing with some linen Micarta for handle scales. What is the best way to cut/grind/sand this stuff?

2. I am ready to heat treat my first three knives. Two are 440C, and the other is mystery stainless 1/16 inch. Can you suggest sources for heat treating? I am not sure I am ready to take this on myself yet--ok a wimp.

To cut the micarta, use a bandsaw or coping saw if you don't have a bandsaw. To shape, use a belt sander and/or files. I like round files best for micarta. To finish use sandpaper then you can buff if you want it shiny.

Definately send it out to heat treat. Texasknife.com is good.

Almost anyone with an oven can do your 440C. The mystery steel is a guessing game - and will be at risk of damage by whoever takes it on. You'll have to understand they are attempting something without any way of knowing whats appropriate (unless you want to take on expensive metallurgical testing.) I doubt Texas Knife would take on the mystery one. Where are you located?

What Rob said ! If guessing, have it treated as 440.It may not even be an austentitic (hardenable) stainless.
Also remember to wear a good organic vapor respirator when doing the micarta.Formaldehyde is what they put in dead people,no need to rush the process.
