Here's the hedge intact from when I bought the place in 05:
Over the years they got big and scraggly, and developed some fungus; according to our nursery they simply don't belong here climate wise.

I used to do this with an axe, meaning I chopped off the shrub at the roots, and then had to go in and try to separate the tangled branches with loppers and small saws, which is a real hassle. Now I go the other way, starting with as high as I can reach and working down. The stumps get removed by axe, which is cheap to replace
