Which do most prefer for sharpening knives? Harbor Freight has a 1X30 for pretty cheap, but I am afraid it is just that....Cheap. Sears sells a 2X42 for about twice the price. I don't mind paying more if I am getting more. I also saw some posts for the Kalamazoo but that one is getting pretty expensive. I am also interested in the availability of belts. I will be mostly light sharpening/touching up to start with. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just my opinion but save your coins and get the Kalamazoo. You will not be sorry.
1x42" belt (many types of belts available)
Baldor motor (good quality)
Right speed for sharpening.

Thanks for the comments so far.

Is there such a thing as a belt sander for wood and another for metal (knives)? Or is it just a matter of choosing the right grit for the job at hand. A check of Craigslist, I found a older Craftsman 1" belt sander. From the pic I would guess it is a 1"X72". Comes on a permanant stand (think shop cart) and shop light for $65. Sounds like a great deal. I am still relatively new to knife sharpening (Gatko and Sharpmaker) so I thought this might be a good way to ease into the belt sander option to see if I can get the hang of it. Thoughts please.

P.S. On this particular model it appears to have a metal bar behind the belt for a portion along the vertical run. Is this good, bad or normal?

1"X42" it is! I followed up on that Craigslist listing and bought a Craftsman 1/3HP, 1725RMP, 1"X42" belt sander. I will now order some belts, find a old knife and try it out. Should be interesting. Thanks again.
