Hey all,

I've found myself with a little extra cash, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to spend it.

Here is my modest collection below, with uses...

E.S.E.E. Izula (EDC)

Murray Carter Neck Knife (EDC)

POS folder (EDC)

Fehrman Last Chance (Wilderness/Survival)

Large Custom Chopper (Wilderness)

I have the small fixed blades covered for EDC, but the weakest area of my collection is the folder. My current folder is a SOG, and it's a piece of S&%@ and I never use it. I carry my Murray Carter or my Izula every day, but I'd love to pair one of them with a Sebbie if I could. A CRK Sebenza would probably the one knife that would round out my collection the best... for now.

But, they are expensive. For the price of the Sebbie, I could get an E.S.E.E. Junglas and an RC-4 and have money left over, and I am thinking about it even though I already have quality knives that fill a similar niche in my collection.

So, if I get the ESEE's, will I just end up wishing I got the Sebbie? If I get the Sebbie, will I end up wishing I got two knives with money to spare instead of one folder?

Last but not least, damn you bladeforums! If bladeforums got commission on these things, bladeforums would have a lot of commissions and stuff.

Thanks

Jgon

save your money and look at other options. imho, a Sebenza is for the person to whom the price is irrelevant.

the Fallkniven U2 and PXL are both a lot cheaper than a Sebenza.

or, for edc, i'd suggest a multitool of some sort. my leatherman has saved my butt far more times than a single blade folder ever could. my leatherman is my only folder and if i want something stronger, i reach for one of my fixed blades.

while i'm sure a sebenza is a lovely knife and all, if you wince at the price, it's not for you. imho ofc.

If you're thinking of a Sebenza, and you have the cash buy it. Why?

If you're thinking you'd like one, and don't get it, you'll always be wishing you did.

If you do buy it, and for some bizarre reason decide you don't like it, you'll have no problem selling it here. Look in the for sale section, if you're lucky you might be able to get a used one a bit cheaper.

Are they worth the money? Who cares, they are excellent knives. If you get it, and appreciate the quality of it, the price will be irrelevant. If price is your main concern, buy the half dozen cheaper knives. Only you can decide what something might be worth to you.

This is something only you can answer. Do you use your folder alot or are you just getting it for the hell of it. From what I've read it seems like you are more of a fixed blade guy and that leads me to believe you would probably end up using fixed blades alot more anyway. I can tell you the Seb is a hell of a folder but it may not be for you. I'm a folder guy and I know if I spent 385 dollars on a nice fixed blade I probably wouldnt be happy since I never really use fixed blades. I would regret it later and wish I had bought more folders :D. Best of luck with whatever your decision may be.

PS. A better alternative might be to just pick up a nice $100+ folder and getting those ESEE knives.

As a big fan of Sebenza's AND ESEE knives, I'll try to convince you that you need both :D

- If you've scraped together enough money for Seb, you should at least try it to see if it suits you. I would recommend getting one off the exchange here from a reputable seller. There is some depreciation from the first sale, but after that it's pretty incremental.

- Get as many ESEE knives as you can after you've tried the Seb. I don't have a Junglas yet, but I do have a 6, a 3Mil, and an Izula and really love them.

Both companies are similar in terms of dedication to quality and customer service. They have me hooked, along with several others here.

i would get the sebenza first then fill out the ESEE stuff. ESEE's are nice, but it sounds like you need a high quality folder for EDC, why not get the best? :D

A Sebenza is kind of one of those knives that you need to handle and carry around for a while just to realize how amazing it is.

Where do you live? Quite possibly there is another knife-nut on this forum who lives nearby and owns a Sebenza. At least from my experience, the knife community is a great one; knifenuts could wax on for hours and hours about knives as long as there is someone around to listen. Although you probably won't find anyone that is willing to lend you one for a week, just being able to handle one could really help out with your decision.

If you live near/in Philadelphia, I would be more than willing to let you handle my Sebenza or Umnumzaan--just be aware that I'm left-handed and therefore have left-handed models.

Get the Sebenza! You seem to be doing okay on fixed blades. If you don't like it you could always sell it and buy the other two E.S.E.E knives. You probably only take a small hit, if you decided to sale it.

I say if you are set for fixed blades, I would get the Sebenza. I own two and like them both.

I find folders to be my most important knives. If you don't want to shell out for the Sebenza, the Spyderco Sage1 and 2 are amazing.

I am all about quality vs. quantity; therefore I vote for getting the Sebenza.

If you're interested in a folding knife, it's hard to go wrong with Spyderco. They offer many different models, are ergonomic and offer great cutting performance for their price-points.

I don't think the quality over quantity argument really applies here only because fixed blades and a Sebenza serve different purposes. It's like if someone asked if they should buy one high quality hammer or a bunch of screwdrivers summing to the price of the hammer. Saying one should buy the hammer because of quality over quantity misses that it will be useless if one needs to screw something in.

Instead, whether to buy the hammer or the screwdrivers should depend on which has more functional purpose. Since the OP already has "screwdrivers" (fixed blades) for any occasion, I do agree the "hammer" (Sebenza) is probably the best choice.

He said what I was thinking. Worst case, you buy the Sebbie and don't like it... they re-sell like hotcakes.

Sebenza great knife BUT! for that money you can get very nice folder plus ESEE .

good post..

Here's the important question to me:
will you use the sebbie, or will you buy it, decide it's too expensive to carry/use, and make a safe queen of it - while continuing to carry your current POS EDC folder?
If you're not afraid of the price tag, buy one - preferably lightly used, use it, and then decide if that's the folder for you.
If it is, you've got a glorious carry folder. If it's not, you've got something that will readily convert to cash that you can use to buy a Junglas, ESEE4, & Izula folder.
