Ok What do you think the best Stainless Steel for a folding knife is?The knife will be used for opening mail, cutting up cardboard, skinning game & wittling wood to food prep.Just about anything you use your folder for.
All will be considered...1.getting & keeping the sharpest edge 2.Ease of sharpening 3.Corosion resistance.Chipping & rolling resistance.
Depending on the terrain & climate they are used in.
Let's just all assume all these steels have an excellent HT & geometrics

My personal favorites are ZDP-189,S30V & H-1

I've never tried BG-42 & S90V...so I can't comment on them

damn I forgot about VG10:confused:

For overall use, I like S30V, but I'd be happy with any of them with a good heat treat & proper blade/edge configuration.

This poll only shows, what is commonly at the market and oftenly bought by ppl. here. Spyderco, Benchmade and a few others.

Would there have been more serial BG42 blades offered, this steel would get more votes.

It always amazes me that the New steel is right at the top. Not that there's anything wrong with the New steel(s)!

Of the steels on the list I guess I would lean towards the S30V. Not because I actually prefer it over any other steel's, but because my favorite knives only come with this type. My favorite steels are Spyderco's VG-10, and BM's 154cm, mainly because I seem to be able too maintain a better edge, than I can with S30V.

VG-10 is my favorite all-around steel. It does great in both fixed blades and folders. I am espescially drawn to the laminated VG-10.

Here's another would be vote for VG10. I selected next choice, ZDP. It is also easy for me to live with BG42, and CPM S90V, S30V and even ATS 34.

Then there's A2, Vascowear, crumware, Duratech 20CV, M2, M4, (preferably CPM), 10V, 1095, and quite a few more. Joe

I've voted H-1, but I would also be happy with S30V, VG-10, BG-42, or ZDP-189. Very difficult to make a choice.

I've had nothing but great luck with S30V. It's a great steel. Any of the steel you listed is pretty good. Except perhaps the 420 or San Mai.

Can't say I have a favorite. I would generally choose VG-10 or one of the Sandviks, 12C27M, 12C27 or 13C26, over the steels listed in the poll.

I guess I haven't put my S30V blades to the test but 154CM has been around long enough to have performed in the field for me and not let me down.
