Greetings everyone,

Here is a razor I just finished up (although I still need to hone it).

This 10/08 Barber’s Notch blade is made from 3/16” O1, and is about 3 inches long. The handle is spalted maple that I found in my wood pile and sent out to K&G Finishing Supplies for stabilization. The wedge is Olive, and the pins and washers are all stainless.

Hey this looks familiar, I just saw your post on the razor forum:) How did you decide on the handle shape? You need to let us know how it shaves!

On wide razors, I like to use these "gun stock" style scales. That way you get full coverage on the blade, but the handle doesn't get in your way when you hold the razor for shaving. I'll try to get it honed up tomorrow.

Do you mean 3/8" ?

Yes, my error. The blade is 3/8" thick.

By the way, I didn't like all the splitting in the pin heads, so I removed the pins and replaced them. The new pins came out much better (but still not perfect).

I also honed the razor and shaved my neck and above my beard. The razor performed well.

Very nice work. Different style of scales though, but they match the blade. How do you like the O1 steel?

Thanks Jerry. I like the razor you just posted too.

O-1 is great stuff. When properly heat treated, I has a fine grain and holds a keen edge. It's also relatively inexpensive. However, it rusts and it can be difficult to heat treat with a simple forge, as the blade needs to be held at critical temperature for about 15 minutes.

Good to know, I have never used O-1 before.

Jerry, I used a incorrect term when I said "critical" temperature. I should have said "Austenitizing" temperature.

Here are a couple of pages from the HTG on O-1.
