I jsut started purchasing multiple 25 and 50 rd mags for my 10/22. do you guys who have a stockpile of mags keep them loaded or just avaliable for loading?

I have some butler creek and some ramline models. If you keep them loaded, do you ever unload them to take the load off the spring or do you just not worry about it?

thanks,
Billyp

i have some loaded/some not, i dont worry about it, i had some SIG P220 .45 mags fully loaded in my safe for at least 5 yrs probably more like 6 or 7, i took them out a while back and fired them, they worked just fine.

i wouldnt worry about any good quality mag "going bad" because its loaded, if ya cant stop worrying load it down by a few rounds and then ya certainly shouldnt have any problems imho.

I'd say to keep the 50 round magazines loaded. They are so damn hard to load I'd think you'd want the springs to weaken a little.

I don't know about the 25 rounders.

I had one of the aftermarket 25 round mags disintegrate on me. Was just stored in the ammo box and when I picked it up it fell to pieces. Was strange..checked the others, all ok... It wasn't loaded.

It probably came into contact with a cleaning chemical.

I had a couple of Butler Creek "Hot Lips" magazines for my 10/22T. Ignoring the instructions (duh!) I sprayed one with (IIRC) Hornady One-Shot. Result? The feed lips disintegrated.

in the long run you're better off leaving them unloaded. it can't be good to leave a spring compressed for a long period of time. back in my 10-22 days i tried a couple of the big mags and was not very happy with them. i just picked up a few of the ruger 10 rounders and called it good. later, ahgar

I have a Hot Lips loader for my 10/22's hi cap mags.

It works rather well and is pretty fast. It's so easy to use, I don't bother to keep my .22 mags loaded.

I doubt that you'd hurt the mag by keeping it partially loaded.

Now, I'm talkin' "off the top of my head" here, so to speak. But, I remember awhile back, reading somewhere that a good magazine won't develop problems from leaving the mag loaded for extended peiods of time. The wear comes from loading and unloading the mag spring, over and over again; ie: compressing/uncompressing. I wish I could remember where I read that, or who said it, but I can't right now. I'll try to remember.

Are there any metalurgical engineers or materials science guys on the forum? They could probably tell you what will degrade the tension on a steel spring.

the spring wont fatigue as long as its a decent quality mag imho, loaded or not.

i have a couple of ramlines (10/22 & berretta 92) and they are at least ok lol, would have to say mine have been 100%, like i said before if ya are worried down load them by 2-3 rounds and that should do it.
