Just got an email that said Emerson and 10-8 are collaborating again. These look interesting for the collectors on here. Just sharing, no skin in the game.

I was looking at them and debating but I just can't get into the black blades. Very cool knife though.

ARG. I snooze and lose. Not sure why I didn't read this thread earlier. Guess i'll need to wait for a fully serrated one to pop up 3rd party.

No, I actually am pretty sure the SF versions are much preferred, although in a certain green place the BT's are more popular than elsewhere.
Ah, the green place. Yes, what you say may be the case there.

I think my reason for not liking the DLC coating is just that it shows wear more than the SF blades. Which for some people is probably exactly why they like it.

Exactly, but its not as easy to wear as many would think.

Not DLC, but Cerakote, just like many Benchmades (called BK1)...it really should be DLC at the price, BM is starting to go that way at least.

Here’s an example: the description for the cqc-15, there are others as well.

https://emersonknives.com/cqc-15-3/

They used to use that Teflon crap line cold steel used but switched I want to say around ‘12.
I absolutely LOVE the BT finish they used on my 2009 CQC-10BTS; I have beat the hell out of it and it shows only the most severe of encounters, as it should IMHO. And I have found that a well broken in "BT" of that vintage is the smoothest of the smooth.

That may be cerakote, not sure the exact year they changed over. The teflon coatings, at least on Cold Steels, tended to come off in flakes (like powder coat/paint) instead of the gradual wear. Kai was the first major brand to have a "black stonewashed" finish where they coat and then tumble black oxide/DLC coated blades. Unfortunately, blackwash loses the non reflective property of DLC.

Benchmade and Strider use CrN (chromium nitride) coatings, they're a flat grey matte color, supposed to be in between BO and DLC in terms of durability, either way much better than cerakote and won't stick in stuff like cerakote does (making it harder to cut).

There are many anecdotal examples of fairly current Emerson coated blades appearing to have dual layer coating, the final/outer layer having a visible texture that wears back to show a slick and extremely durable smooth layer of coating.

If that is the case (dual layers) it sounds like black oxide...Teflon comes off in flakes usually and the durability is terrible no matter whose knife it’s on.

Cerakote probably isn’t a great thing to have contacting your food, but it doesn’t flake like Teflon, BO is iron based and DLC is carbon so those are both totally harmless.
