I am about to pull the trigger on a kmg, burin have heard that 14 inch wheels are a better size than 10 for hollow grinding and such. I do mostly hunting and bushcraft knives around 7-9 inches long, but I want to do some Bowies and plan on getting into folders. What is your guys preference and why?

BIgger is Better.... Go 14" you can still do smaller knives. The 14" gives me a real nice clean Saber Grind on larger blades.

I need a larger wheel as well, I have an 8" and it's very nice for doing deep grinds but would like a big wheel as well.

I have both and I would take the 10 inch before buying a 14 inch. A 14 inch is almost like flat grinding to me and I like deep hollows for looks. just my opinion. Larry

It depends what results you want, right? Draw out a 14 inch circumference on a piece of paper, cut it, and apply it to then end profile of your intended bar stock.
This way you can see what your grind will look like in profile.
Thickness and height all play into it.

I have the 14 and absolutely love it, but you wont get that short deep hollow with it. If that is what you are after, 8 or 10 would be more suitable.
A lot of guys use the wheel to do an initial grind on their stock, even if flat grinding. It's supposed to extend the life of your belts. I've never bothered with it, but you might hear some good input from others.

I hollow with a 10" right now, I like to take my line a little higher on some of the grinds and I'm having to flatten it near the edge. I just ordered a 12" and I think that will do the job.

I have a 12"er from kmg I love it. But I lso have a 4" , 8" and 2" wheels a well .

Good stuff, this exactly what I was wondering, thanks guys!
My other question is this, can I replace one of the aluminum wheels on the platen with a rubber contact wheel so I can grind on it? It seems dumb to have to change the tooling arm when I could have both on hand

Yes.

It's very convenient to have a 2" small wheel available when using the platen.

I only have transpallet wheels on my flat platen and use them a lot as contact wheels...i don't know if aluminum wheels won't fit for grinding, would they melt?
I don't like short height hollow grinds, but a big radius wheel make an almost flat grind...with a bit more drama at the plunges (very nice for thin stock knives)

14" is the way to go. I have one from KMG and it's nice.

Damn don, now that makes me want a 14" wheel. I love grinding on the wheel especially when profiling with the rest set up. But on 1/4" stock and an 8" wheel you get a good size arc. But that 14" looks perfect.

If I had one wheel it would be a 10". I have them all from 1/2" to 14" and I do like the 14 but
again if I had one.
Ken.

I just can't get over that wheel, I need one now.

That I would like to see
