$10 Ranger, lock won't hold

So I spot a familiar black sheath on a gun show table. Inside is a 112 two dot that has been used hard. Looks like the blade tip was broken and re-profiled because the nail nick is gone. Maybe an 1/8 inch of loss in blade length and some loss in width, but the edge is sharp and the rework was very well done. The vendor wants $10. I don't have a 112 and I figure the pristine sheath is worth that. After cleaning, it obvious someone has polished the sides of the bolsters and spine (lock lever) with maybe a sander of some sort leaving very fine marks. Okay, still a good old Buck. However, I discovered that the lock isn't holding. A sharp rap on the back of the blade and it closes.

So is there any cure short of sending it to Buck? I'm assuming the problem may be related to removal of material from the lock lever? It's very easy to open the knife, even without the nick. Thoughts on what a repair might cost? Probably not a warrenty issue?

Thanks for any info or insight.

some times pocket gunk gets in the blade lock nock
clean it
if that dont do it
send it to buck as it is a safety issue
some early 112's did not have nail nicks

I sent a three line (BUCK/110/U.S.A.) two pin 110 to Buck for refurbishing. It had seen some heavy use and a lot of sharpening. I asked them to refurbish it, not replace and sent them a $6.95 sharpening/cleaning fee, indicating that I wanted them to contact me if there were any other charges for the refurbishing.

I got it back yesterday. (The turn-around was about a month.) They did a nice job. The blade though worn from use and sharpening (mis-sharpening perhaps?). is now polished and sharpened with a new factory edge. The Ebony is cleaned and looks oiled. The brass, though having many nicks and scratches is polished and shiny. No, it doesn't look new, but it looks like a beautiful old user. They did some warranty work, the blade tip was exposed when closed and it is now seated properly. There was blade play but it is now much tighter.

They did all this work and did not charge any more than the $6.95. VERY GOOD DEAL for such an old (almost 40 years) knife.

I need to get a digital camera other than my cell phone to post pictures. :(

Here is a cell phone picture of the knife, a 2 pin, no dot, 3 line 110:

I need a better camera :(

Hi Songdog,

The older 112's did not have a nail nick. Can you post a photo or a scan?

Here is a scan of a 2 dot 112, notice no nail nick. I added the 3 dot stag as it has about 1/8" tip loss & re-profile.

I'll see about a photo. My knife looks a lot like the one in the top picture, but has been extensively sharpened, more than the stag. I didn't know about no nail nick in early 112s. Sounds like the right thing to do is send it in, as 334Dave says, it's a safety issue.

Woldfdog, based on your experience, I might also send in my early 110. It has the upside down mark and no handle pins at all. It could do with a clean up.

Like I said, mine doesn't look NEW, but it is clean, polished, tight and sharp, and looks ready to start its second life.

No handle pins at all!!!! Those are fairly rare, and from what I recall, only been a couple even mentioned here.

Make sure you tell Buck you just want it cleaned up and nothing replaced.
