If you are like me, you have a carpenter's table saw and a bunch of old dull 10" wood blades that have collected over the years. Does anyone know what steel these common 10" wood blades are made of and whether they might be cut up for a small knife?

I'm guessing the steel is something different from what you'd find in a big lumbermill blade.

You have articulated a very good question. I note that there is a huge difference in the price of what is available from $100.00 plus blades to less than $5.00 at walmart. I always seem to end up cutting a nail no matter how vigilent i resolve to be, so tend to get the cheap blades, and get them more often! Surely even the cheap blades must be decent steel!

I was wondering about these 10" blades not to long ago myself. I was finally fired up about knife making so I got one of these
cheapblades and thought I would cut some blanks with one of these little oxygen/map gas sets-HA HA. These things don't really cut like an oxyacetylene system. It just kind of melts and burns the steel. It was horrible really! Well any way I only got about an inch and a half along the profile before I ran out of oxygen. That's when I realized that I was going about this business all wrong, it's great to want to jump right in and start making knives but
now I think it may be a better idea to just try and get my shop in order and set up properly before I try to many things like that again. Going at something as dangerous as this half-a**** is a sure way to get injured and I want to set a better example for my kids to follow.
So, now if I can only get my wife to stop putting things in the garage, oops, I mean shop, faster than I can move things out...

Sorry for being long winded, it's just nice to have sympathetic ears (read=captive audience). Take care-Guy T.

You can get the blades resharpened at some sharpening shops. I think its about 40 cents per tooth on carbide tipped blades. Depending on the quality of the blade, they can or can't be replaced for that price.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

I ground out, a blade from a old rip saw once, great blade flexible, razor sharp, good edge holding, used it for all kinds of things I used a hack saw for initial shape took forever but was fun. fyi keep som of the saw tooth on te back of the blade, makes for an intersting look and a decent survival saw.
