So, what's the best fixed blade choice in the ≤ $100. Let's say that this is the one you'd throw in the trunk of your car for "just in case"? Maybe as a part of your BoB that you have in your car.

Thanks.

can i cheat and count blades available as blanks for <$100?

if so: Fallkniven S1 and F1.

Nope. :) $100 and ready to go. Open the box it came in, go: "ohh... nice", throw in trunk (and forget about it - kind of approach).

If you want a good knife under $100, you can get something from ESEE, Kabar, Becker etc. But .....

As a "just in case" "in the trunk of the car" knife I would recommend Cold Steel GI Tanto. It is very cheap, long, tough knife. Since you not going to be using it on a regular basis you don't have to worry much about edge retention, handle comfort etc... Save $75 and get a "just in case" med kit or something else.

for me, the RC-3Mil. Or rather the ESEE-3Mil I guess it's called now. I've thought about replacing it with the HEST for the bottle opener

Stay on top of the release situation and you'll probably be able to get your hands on a Military overrun Scrapyard Regulator for $100.

Check back here (http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/) several times a day and you should be fine. (release should be soon)
Even if the overruns run out, the regular Regulator is only $20 more.

Edit: Check the forum for info on the knife. http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=0

Aw, that's too easy. A Buck Alaskan Guide Vanguard with a rubber handle from Cabela's. Exactly $100, S30V steel, and just about the perfect size and shape for most things that you're likely to need a knife for.

Get it while you can, though, they're down to their last 20 knives.

I'll add the Ontario Ranger RD6 to some of the good suggestions above.
A relatively large and very tough knife made in the USA of 1/4" thick 5160 steel.
It also has an extended handle pommel that can be used as an impact device, which
is a feature I think is valuable in an "emergency" knife.

Luckily, there are a bunch of good knives under the $100 mark.

-Benchmade Fixed Griptilian or one of the Rant knives (I preffer the drop point one).

-Ka-Bar Beckers.

-Kershaw Outcast.

-Fallkniven F1.

-ESEE RC-4 or RC-6 (the 6 is just five dollars over the limit, but well worth it!).

If you're not going to carry it around and will just keep it in the truck, go with something big and heavy like the Beckers. I'm assuming you've got an EDC blade or two on your person to take care of the more delicate cutting tasks.

Maybe he's already got one of those. Or two. ;)

Personally, if I was going to spend $100 on a knife, I would get the ESEE.
