Curious about what the knife guys think of this: Sportsmans Guide is offering Khuks made prior to 1890, carried by Ghurkas, both 17" and 19" "leaf blade models" for 179.00

cat number is AX4M-80278

I have no idea what antique khuks are worth and leave that to the experts.

I wouldn't be surprised if these are from the same place as the Atlanta Cutlery ones, who I believe is selling them noticably cheaper(but with less guarantee as to waht you'll get). SUre someone else here will know better though

Interesting. No sheaths though. Would be neat to compare them to the closest HI equivalents.

Also, check out item # WX1-31781. What kind of "Regimental" Kukri can you get for $14?

Regards,

Svashtar

I think I could break one of the 14.97 ones in 3 minutes.

The other kind looked geniune. At 3/8" thick and 1890 steel I would not count on it comparing to a HI for use.

for half the price I can get a khuk that will outlast and outcut. But I am curious to see what the collectors say. Is that market price for an old one?

Hi Munk,They are even using the same photo of the same 2 khukris that Atlanta Cutlery are touting at $20 cheaper a piece,
And as they say they are still packed in original cosmoline that means there condition will vary as you cant be certan what they are like till you clear that thick black semi solidified gunk of them!

Ah..cosmoline. I never had military service, being the last registered for the Vietnam draft but never called. But do have sweet memories of cosmoline- so many surplus weapons, unwrapped, cleaned, oiled, test fired...the golden days of import, before CLINTON.

On items I can compare, Sportsman's Guide is uniformly high. Great hype though. And "gunk," you bet. Like axle grease with a high grit content.

Thought I'd share something I've found out.(Somebody's probably already used this.)"Windex" is the best stuff to take that gunk off with. The Tokarov TT33 I just got was full of cozmoline...stripped it down, sprayed all the parts with "windex", wiped everything dry and oiled it up and ressembled the pistol. Worked great! It must be the ammonia in it. I just make sure that every part is completely dry and than I oil everything really well.

I like to try my hand at restoration of about one old C&R a month.
My favorite technique is to dissemble and soak the small metal parts in regular gas for a few days. Then I spray bottle gas over the barrel, receiver and stock until all surface cosmo is gone. Then it's purple power liquid cleanser on the wood until I get as much of the cosmo to the surface as the wood is willing to release. Then it's sandpaper time until I'm ready to rub it down with a combo paste made from Turpentine/beeswax/boiled linseed oil and pure tung oil.

Gum Out Brand Carb Cleaner from Walmart also works good on grease removal as does mineral spirits

I think so. I usually use the "Windex" to get things down to the gun itself and when that's nice and clean I clean and oil as usual. I may be all wet but it seems to work real well for me. I've used this method on a couple of surplus weapons with great results.:)

Khukri article in the Jan. Blade mag says Atlantic Cutlery bought out the Nepal Armory.

Per Atlanta Cutlery, they and another US company made the purchase. I've seen the other company's site, and they use the same pictures and descriptions and the same prices.
