100 + year old Sheffield Bowie knife

I was interested in other people's opinions regarding whether or not an old knife is still viable. I have an old Sheffield Bowie knife import. Stag handles with pins. Overall length about 10" with a brass hilt. Condition is nice. Obvious patina on blade and some corrosion that was smoothed out.

I am not certain about the blade steel. Handles are tight. Could this still be a user? I'm not going to chop wood but was just wondering if the blade would have a tendency to break due to age and material. Was thinking about having a nice leather sheath made for it. 'Cause it does look very cool.

Any input is appreciated.

I would have a hard time using a knife that's 100+ years old for much of anything.
Could you post some pictures on this blade?

Could you use it? Yes. If there is only the surface patina as you say then the steel will still be strong enough to use. Its not going to hold an edge like M390 but as a general user it will likely be fine.

Well I have a few blades that are in the 50-60 yr old range and they are just fine. It depends on many factors, mostly its condition and what you plan on doing with it.

Hell yes you can use it.

That sounds like a very cool discovery. If it's in that good a condition I'd wear it and use it every chance I got. Some like to leave them unsharpened, as is with patina and all the age...which maintains its collector value. Personally, from what it sounds like, I'd clean it up and keep it. Maybe customize it to my liking.

Hope you can post a pic.

No, you dont. Post a Photobucket pic.

Pending the promised pics, Id say the following in regards to using the knife; I use a Cattaraugus 225Q from WWII, but I wouldnt use a hundred yrs old Sheffield Bowie. Retire that knife and buy a more modern one. Bowie knives are plentiful and in some cases affordable.
