Sea, Over the years I've really dug into this question you ask (as it is of interest to many here) and have come to the conclusion that these asterisk stamped knives are just after the forged blades. Making them of the fine blanking era or stock removal method. Yes, still 440C steel. DM
 
For what it's worth, here you can compare the blade with one that may be a couple years earlier. If you open two windows for this thread you can get them both up and bounce back and forth quickly between them. Quite a bit of difference in the blades.
