102 Woodsman

The 102 is my favorite Buck fixed blade. It will handle anything from fish and small game to mule deer. Although not the ideal knife for field dressing elk, it can get the job done. I have seven of them, each with a different handle material.

The 102 was my first Buck Knife back in the mid 70's and is still my favorite model today. What are the seven different handle materials? I have 5 different handle material, black phenolic, stag, cocobola, white cow bone and “rubber” (602).

I can think of stacked leather and Orangewood. If you want to count limited editions, the 802 "Signature" Limited Edition is a 102 spin off with checkered walnut. Two versions of the Klink Specials were made, one with Ironwood and Stag, the other was Cherrywood and stag. David Yellowhorse has done several based on the 102. FYI, the rubber handle material was called Kraton, originally a product of Shell.

Stacked leather for LL Bean. Stock photo. There was also a mirror polished Limited edition in stacked leather.

My first Buck knife was a 102. Took it fishing and canoe camping very often. I don't remember exactly when I got it, but I bought it new with a flapover leather sheath probably sometime in the late 70's or early 80's. I don't use it anymore really, but I still have it.

Resurrecting an old thread. I wanted to post pictures of my 102s, but didn't think it was worthy of a new thread. So I did a search and came up with this. (Seems like a lot of long-time "Buck People" are still active...)

Anyway, here are my 102s: Bone, Green Canvas Micarta, Phenolic, and Red Micarta. (Sorry for the Chris Reeve tear-down mat as a background. :)) If anyone has any information on what the steel would be for the bone version, it would be much appreciated! I assume 420HC, but not sure if it is a special edition. The blade has a 2015 stamp. Thanks!
