I have sold off my Benchmade Mini Griptilian so now I have no Benchmade representation in my meager "collection". :p

Looking to get one of the following:

710 McHenry Williams D2
740 DejaVoo S30V
890 Torrent 154CM
707 Sequel 154CM

Which one of these ~$103 Benchmades do you like and why?

I am not looking to fill any particular role per se, but rather just looking for a nice quality folder. If it gets put into say an EDC role or whatever, then so be it. I am just not trying to buy one for any particular purpose. This is a fun buy. :D

Thanks.

710 - because everyone should have one at least at some point
740 - just because I like it :D

The 710 is nice. It is a good representation of Benchmade. Nice G10, nice AXIS lock, good blade steel. That being said I don't personally like it that much. I guess it's the blade shape and that there are better AXIS locks on different models. Yes, not every AXIS lock is the same. I have been meaning to start a thread on that.

I'm not a big fan of the 740. Mainly because it is tip down and I don't like that combined with a liner lock which I'm not a fan of. The blade is S30V and is nice and thin and should be a good slicer. It is close to the same size as the 710, maybe a little bigger(?).

The 707 is quite a bit smaller than these other 2. If you like the size of a mini grip you will like this one. It is a really nice folder, it is just smaller. I also don't like aluminum handles so that turns me off a little. But it has a really smooth AXIS lock, better than the 710 but not the best (of course this is my opinion). It is almost like a smaller 710 but without a recurve.

The 890 I don't have any experience with. I do like the look of it and it would be the one I probably pick because I think it would be a nice knife and I don't have experience with it. I believe it has Zytel handles so you are not going to get the nice G10 and full liners that Benchmade does well.

I probably wouldn't pick any of those for an only Benchmade. I know I say it everywhere but I would go with a 950 Rift or the 14205 in that order. These two have the best AXIS lock that I have felt personally.

Good luck, they are all great knives when you come down to it.

Thanks for your detailed reply. That's exactly what I was looking for !

Just looked at the 14205 HK Snody Axis and THAT is one sweet looking knife. Thanks for the recommendation. It just shot to the top of the list.

Save up another 15 bucks and get a 940/943. They are like a more refined EDC utility versions of the 710. The 707 sequel is nice but I find it too small.

Spend a little extra and get the 960 in red, I have one and it's a great knife. The blade is D2 steele.

As always go with the HK14205. One of the best folders in the BM stable. I also like the 890 torrent. For an AO knife it is great. It has G-10 handles. The 710 is the classic BM but, it is also has a 4" blade. As stated, out of all the ones you said, get the HK14205.

I love it when a guy has conducted his investigation and narrowed down his selection to a few certain knives. That way, I can make a recommendation that's NOT on the list... ((( :D )))

Benchmade Rift

I don't have a BM yet....I know, I know..... but why did you get rid of the mini grip. Thats the one I was looking at. It seems from what I read it is the "starter" BM. True?

Yep, the Mini Grip was my "starter". But now I'm ready to move up. :p

The Mini Grip I had was only my third "real" knife I got. And it quickly became my EDC and my favorite for quite a while. But as I accumulated more knives from Spyderco and Kershaw (especially Kershaw), the Mini Grip lost it's luster and became too "small" at the same time. ;)

I loved the Axis lock and it was always smooth, quick and solid. I just liked others better for the EDC role. My 2 favorites right now are the Kershaw Skyline and Buck Vantage Pro. And now that my CRKT Ken Onion Ripple has arrived, this may be the perfect EDC for me. I am immensely impressed with it. Time will tell.

4 inches is big.

Im all for big folders, but understand that 4 inches is HUGE. The nice thing about the 710 is that it does a good job getting a blade just under that into a small handle. And that is the one I would recommend out of your list if you are certain you want the size.
