I just finished this blade made from 1045 steel from a 1 inch shaft. I differentially hardened it using the clay method, and quenched it using gunters super quench. It's done in a hybrid polish, and i used ferric chloride to bring out hamon. Pictures aren't the greatest but best i could do. It is my second blade and i hope to improve. The sheath is made form soft leather, with same ray skin on top. I also did a katana blade in the shobu zurkiri style and hope to post finished pics.

Old Jim would be proud to have that named after him. It's bloody gorgeous.

How hard is your 1045 after it is tempered? Does it hold an edge well? Whay did you select that steel? Did you consider others, and if so why were they rejected?

Nice looking knife!

i don't know the actual rc hardness. but glass won't scratch the cutting edge. I selacted the steel because it was around at the time, plus i was curious to use the super quench on 1045, the article i read said you can use it up 1050. when i'm done polishing the katana i'm working on i'll test it post results & pics.
