Hi guys, I posted the blade earlier, here is the bowie finished. I ended up going to 1000 grit on the blade then a 1 min. etch in feric then rub with flitz. The handle is walnut burl and the fittings are damascus. So what do you think? Thanks for looking.

Don! that's one of the nicest bowies I've ever seen posted on the danged forum. Hands down classic.... What's your ferrule'n guard? I just etched a nice double edged bowie myself. So I'm gonna follow suit and do the before and after thing too but this is a hard act to follow! Not that it's for sale, but what "would" you ask for such as this. Incidentally, mine too is going to be hafted in presentation burl walnut. Don't you just love custom stock makers with "short armed" customers? :)

beautiful!

regards, mitch

Wow!
I love angular bowies that are sharp enough to cut just looking at them, so this one is at the top! That hamon is beautiful- a work of art.
Sorry, but I'm drooling right now.
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!

The hamon seems more subtle on the finished blade - or is that just the lighting ? Great hamon , very nice lines and proportions .

gorgeous. I am definitely going to fondle that one in St. Louis!! (with your permission of course. :D )

Beutiful! That sir is a work of ART!, very clean. I love the way the hamon turned out.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate them. I need to work on my photo skills and get a better camera.

Hey Don! I just met your nephew here in Tallahassee this past Saturday at a local hammer-in. His name is Phillip??? ( I hope I remembered that right) Man what a talent he has! And so young! Whew!

That's a nice blade you posted, I'm really wanting to get into similar steels with water quenches. You developed a very nice hamon on that one!

Hi Guy, Phillip is doing good isn't he? I'm also from Tallahasse, My Family had a store ''Fishermen Three" we sold fishing tackle, boat supplies, seafood and KNIVES back in the 80s,also did a lot of commercial fishing, sold the business in 1990 and moved to the Ozarks now I'm just a knifemaker :D made my first knife in Tallahassee, also my father Don Jr was a well know maker in the area at the time. It's good to hear from you, how long you been in Tallahassee?
Ho, BTW, I oil quench all my blades.
Don

Roger has that right, classy! And from an oil quench to boot. What temperature are you austenitizing the 1060 at prior to quenching?

Yeah if Phillip keeps it up he will make a name for himself in the business! I grew up in Pensacola but I've been here in Tallahassee now since '89 and while I've always wanted to make knives I didn't get started until around '97 or so. There is quite a lively group of knifemakers and bladesmiths down here. We've begun to coallesce into a group loosely called the Southern Bladesmiths. We will probably be having quarterly meetings/hammer-ins, and at Saturday's meeting there was talk about inviting you to one at some point if you are interested. You come back down this way occasionally to go fishing don't you? (By the way Lake Jackson still hasn't filled back up completely after it all drained away down the sinkhole some years ago!)

Don, It didn't surprize me it turned out this well! Your photo skills are good enough, remember you just a knifemaker........ Hey, mine suck to....

Guy, I heated this one in the forge to nonmagnetic. If I were to use my elec. furnace I would heat to 1500 then quench. I do get down to Tall once or twice a year, I've been out to Ray Roberts shop a few times. John Butler is a good freind and Jerry Grice was a great guy and good freind of mine from way back, he will be missed. Good group of guys you have down there.
Thanks Ray, I fill better about my pics.
Thanks Roger.
Don
