I went to admiral steel to find some 1080 or 1084 steel. All they had was either 1075 or 1095. I dont want 1095, because I heard the heat treat was a bit more particular than with 1080, but I dont know if 1075 is good for making a decent knife. I plan on a tactical knife as a gift for an officer friend. I want to have a decent hamon, and know it is easier to achieve with the 10xx series steel. Should I go with the 1075? Any suggestions?

Go with the 1075 as there isn't all that much difference from 1080 or 1084.For a good hamon a 1050 is about the minimum and 1070 does well. The 1095 would not have as good a hamon though it would have better edge retention.

1075 will make a fine knife and a great hamon  Don Fogg creates the best hamons IMHO and he uses 1095, check out his web site.

Matt Lamey is using a lot of 1075, and his bowies have been sporting some of the coolest hamons. Matt says the stuff cuts really well too.

anybody know a good supplier for 2" wide 1095, 1080, 1075, etc.? (besides Admiral?)

Check with Kelly Cupples for both 1080 and sheared-to-size 1095. His nickname on here is "octihunter". Email and he'll send you a price/inventory list. He sells by the pound.

Is there any knifemaker heat treat info for 1075?
More to the point, at what temperature to temper for the best hardness/toughness?

Admiral steel has temperatures and approx. Rc value for a starting point but not much for the "toaster oven temperer" such as I.

Harden 1075 from 1500F , tempering at 400F will get you about 59 Rc, 600F -53Rc.

I make the WSK in 1075. Have had all good feedback. My WSK is 0.250 stock and ends up close to that when finished. I can help you with HT info, especially if your blade will be thick and large. I had a real devil of a time finding the proper quenchant temperature and quench time and my WSK blades are thick, long and wide. You can PM me if you like and I will return with my phone number. I do a full quench and DO get a hamon, probably not as pronounced as with a differential quench but visible on the finished blade and even shows when blued. I have been getting 1075 from Admiral.

Kelly Cupples usually only stocks 1.5" max width. I tried to call Pacific, Raymond....do they have a catalog? Is there someone specific to call?
