So, in the effort to be neighborly I offered to make the next door neighbor a knife. You know, to apologize for the grinder and hammer noise. The gentleman asked for a "pigsticker" to send to his buddy in Alaska to kill pigs with. Apparently he kills hogs in Hawaii during the winter, so this is what I came up with. Thought I'd share it with everyone. Nothing fancy, but I think it will do a good job.
Steel: 1075 from Admiral Steel
Heat Treatment: Two stage interrupted water/oil quench, differentially hardened with no hamon (I treated for strength rather than aesthetics because he apparently likes to finish off big hogs with knives
So I played it safe.)
Thickness: 3/16 inch
Length: 11" Blade 5" Hilt
Width: 1 1/4 inch
Hilt: Epoxy impregnated flat paracord wrap over two layers of Dacron
Guard: 1075 steel epoxy coated over black enamel
Sheath: Poplar scabbard sealed with wood stain and a Dacron wrap for added strength
Menuki: Silver Octopus
