this gun may not look like much but its 108 years old, i stumbled on it several months ago and finally baught it. the owner of the gun shop had it in a barrel of junk guns turns out she was a m28 finnish nagant on a 1897 reciever, its barrel was installed in 1928 and was made by SIG arms in 1927. 10 bucks and a day later shes setting in a m39 stock minus the metal (still gotta find that) shes going to be a wall hanger for now, i kind of like that battle scared look.should i refinish the stock or leave it be?

this is my third personal mosin-nagant, and between me and my shooting buddies this is our 8th nagant. i refinished most of the others, should i refinish this one to?

When I look at the before-and-after pix in the gun magazines I always like the before pictures better. I think that stock is beautiful.

If you want to look at some new (or new-looking) wood sometime you have some of that around....

the problem with that stock is that its got a few hair line cracks, i can fix them but it will ruin the finish and ill have to refinish it. the cool thing is that the gun has a BUNCH of arsonal repairs on that stock. the patterens of the diffrent added blocks of wood are pure art, i whish i had a better digital. the first one is like mine, the others are just other examples.

I don't even know what you're talking about but I vote refinish. I like projects and it would be cool to use a unique kind of wood.

Hi KaBar-

If it is going to hang on a wall, just return it to functional and then remove the firing pin to make it useless to a thief. Don't touch the finish on the stock, that aged patina is what makes the old battle rifle so cool in the first place!

You said the guns were going to give you a pension? Leave it as is, an authentic old war rifle. If you can get an authentic stock without repairs and still original finish, fair enough.

well, the stock thats on it is from a later finnish nagant, a m39. the gun its self is a m28. the gun was origionally a m91, what alot of people call a dragoon.

the small stock laying under the gun is the origonal m28 stock, its missing both of the front grips and metal work. it will be a pain to track down but not to much of a problem. ive refinished several guns reciently, 2 nagants and a k31 swiss. i refinished the top 91/30 in the first picture.

General rule is never refinish any gun since it kills collector value In your case since there are millions and it will never be worth much go ahead.
Have fun.

value is relative. my garand has been refinished, although not by me. this guns been with atleast 3 barrels, probably more. it was my best friends match rifle for over 15 years. its not worth much from a collectors stand point but it means alot to me.
