1080-1084 question

I just ordered some 1080 from Admiral. I hope I did the right thing. I normally use 1095 for < 5" blades (don't get me wrong I still love 1095) but I wanted to try a couple things with the 1084 for the higher manganese count. I spoke with Terry about the 1080-1084 situation and it seems the 1080 will work fine. Plus, Terry says the 1080 will blend very well in damascus. Has anyone worked with this 1080 on a regular basis? How does it work and hold up?

It kinda all depends on what you get exactly. 1080 is *about* the same as 1084. If youve worked with 1084 youve probably gotten some 1080 before. Its become a more normal occurance to generalize the steels. So Im surprised Admiral just isnt calling this 1084, as most of the 1084 I previously got from them was actually more like 1085 or 1090: see what I mean about generalizing. Most of the time the generalizations are to call everything 1075, 1084 and 1095 instead of using the "in-betweens".
Why? because this ways a lot easier.
1080 is gonna perform like 1084.

Buxton has been using 1080 of late. Said in an earlier thread that it works fine, just like 1084.

Yeah, I've made quite a bit of damascus with it and it heat treats like 1084, not much difference, if any, in performance, toughness or edge holding that I can see.
Next time you need steel contact Kelly Cupples, they buy several tons when they buy and then have it analyzed so you know exactly what your getting, good prices too.

Hey Bill, who's Kelly Cupples? I don't know that name offhand. Do you have a phone # or e-mail?
