Hey guys, I have bought some 1084 and, 5160 steel from Aldo Bruno. I would like to ask you in advance what is the the recomended quenchant for each of these steels and do either require "soak time". How warm does the quenchant need to be? I am asking in advance and planning on writting all the info down, so far I have heard to not soak 1084 and just quench as soon as it hits 1500. Since these will be some of my first knives im just going to do a *straight/solid* not sure what its called quench but when you just dip the whole knife in the quenchant and leave it in there until its cool without moving it around, I plan on going up to 220 grit before the hardening. Im not going for a hamon or anything either. So my main questions are on soak time at what temp before quench, the quenchant, and how hot the quenchant should be. Thanx

Hey, I'm not an expert or anything, but I'm finishing a knife from 1080 that I quenched with some old heated peanut oil. Got good results, and a pretty neat quench line too.

I heard of peanut oil as a good quench for 1084, Thanx for the reply, Im sure someone more experienced will come on here.

I use Parks oils exclusively. Occasionally, when Mr. Cashen talks, I listen. ;) :)

I use Parks 50 for the 1084, W1, W2, 1095 and Parks AAA for O1, 5160, L6, and damascus mixes with similar compositions(O1/L6, etc...)
