Thanks for all the kind words guys
The clay was satanite. I put a light wash over the whole blade, then a series of lines and criss-crosses in a littler thicker clay, and then a dense coating about 1/8" thick on the spine.
I quenched this one in 145 degree mineral oil, just to see what I could get.
In hand, the cutting edge is nearly mirror polished while the back is a light frosty grey. The line is a crisp white line (even though it looks black in the photo) and there are tons of cross-hatches in cloud-form surrounding the line.
I hand sanded this blade to a 2,000 grit finish. Then etched it about 10 times in vinegar. Each time I rubbed it down over and over again with Flitz on my thumb, and polishing paper on the hard edge.
Kinda' sad all that work isn't translated in a photo, but it's there in hand.
You better not be able to see any gaps Mr. Bump
The copper is a piece of water pipe I split and flattened.
Thanks Fellas
