Another indirectly related question...

Anyone know where reliable 1084 could be acquired in thicknesses greater than 1/4 inch? I'm looking for some around 5/16" and have been unsuccessful through the standard sources that are brought up.

1084 C .80/.94 Mn .60/.90

1095 C .90/1.04 Mn .30/.50

5160 C.60 Mn.85 P.35 max S.040 max Si.25 Cr.80

The differance between the 1084 and 1095 is mostly the Manganese (Mn) content. 1084 is a deeper hardening steel due to the higher manganese content. It is also more forgiving in the heat treat. 1095 must be quenched quicker than the 1084 to get its full hardness.

5160 has considerable more alloying then the simple 10 series steels. it benfits from the deep hardening properties of the high manganeses content and has a good amount of Chromium which gives it a good wear resistance.
