Can I quench 1084 in peanut oil? What is the rate of cracking, and what RC hardness can it get to? How many times can you reuse peanut oil as a quenching fluid?

Thanks,
Celton

Have you tried doing a search on the subject? It's been covered A LOT over time. Google is your friend...

But yes, you should be fine quenching in peanut oil. It's what I use.

I believe you will hear the recommendation here to quench 1084 into canola oil that has been heated to 130F.

Yes, and read the stickies in this subforum for lots of related info.
Please don't use motor oil products! Bad for you (fumes, flammability), and not right for the steel either.

Quick question/ 1084. When heat treating multiple blades in sequence, the temperature of the quench obviously increases. Is this an issue? Thanks

130 sounds like it is the best. Over or under that is not as good. Unless you are way over or way over I would doubt that you could tell the difference.

Make sure you have enough oil, however. Think more than one gallon.

Yes it can become an issue. Keep checking the temp, and if it climbs too high you will have to cool the oil down. I used to use a large juice container that was filled with water and frozen. I would swish that bottle around in the oil until the temp dropped back down.

I think I need to add another gallon to my ammo can, now only half full. Thanks
