A few weeks back there was a thread about trying to get a good hamon using Aldo's 1084. Here's a fighter blade I've been working on using some 1084 I purchased from Aldo from the first batch he had smelted. I'm thinking it was 2007 or possible earlier. Not the best photo using shop lighting but the hamon is there. I did 3 normalizing heats and let the blade cool to room temp each time. Was going to set the oven at 1450 but 1455 came up so I just went with it. Did a 3 minute soak and quenched in room temp oil. The oil at one time was straight horse grade mineral but I'm sure its now got some type A mixed in. I'm using a homemade clay mix that has some animal by products in the mix. This is a top secret mix. :D

Nice hamon, very clean looking. I didn't know you could do a hamon on 1084. Straight quench, interrupted quench, anything special about your quench?

Nice blade yaR!

What kind of "animal by products" did you use?

... just curious?

Straight in and fully submerged except for the tang. Don't forget to say abbra ca dabbra when the blade is fully submerged. :D

Do they make Sheep grade or Goat grade mineral oil? :D

And, was your quench tank facing Nautical North? :D :D

NAUTICAL NORTH, I think it was. That's why my Even Heat is on the north side of my shop. As for sheep or goat grade mineral oil. As far as I know you don't need to change there oil like you do with a horse.

Ita, As you already know I raise a few cows. Part of my secret clay mixture comes out of the north end of these animals, maybe its the south end. :D

Now that I’ve had a chance to ponder it,… Great answer yaR!

… but I think I like the north end better than the south end of a cow.

I always sleep with my head facing north,… I have better cow dreams that direction…

You've got me intrigued now Ray! I always thought it was manure from a lactating cow mixed with some of her clabbered milk (apparently colostrum is even better) that made the best mix. The polarity of the bovine is more or less important depending on the lunar phases and such.

As for the hamon, looks good, as of course does the blade!

lihP, One of my cows just had a calf Monday so I think the colostrum has made it into the calf but I have two more cows that are due next month. Now if I can get close enough to them for a little squirt milk with some colostrum in it. I'll try that into my secret clay mixture.

Here's a couple progress pictures of the knife. Going with osage orange and ebony and my usual wagon wheel. I need to shorten the handle by 3/8". Now to see if I can do that without screwing things up.

I call BS on the clay mixture. :D

Nice looking fighter, Ray. I like the osage/ebony contrast and the drop in the handle looks like it would give some good leverage.

Hey Ray. Gosh, they let anyone in here don't they?

That blade is looking great. I've got some 1080+ from AKS that I just might try to get a hamon line with. You are soooo inspiring. I just might start grinding off my plunge-cuts too.

Just kidding guys, Ray always gives me crap. Hope to see you around one of these days. -M

Mike, Who needs plunge cuts. I'm not even sure if I could do one anymore. :D

Here's one that I did out of the 1080+ last year. That was with using my old fashioned clay mix. http://www.hawknknives.com/knives/_popup-knife-ClassicHunter.html I know it would turn out better with my secret clay mix.

Why don't you head down to the Oregon Show with Dave and I can give both of you some crap. He's right across the isle from me.

Hi Ray. That's a pretty nice hunter. I don't think I'll be going to any shows this year, as I have a ton of orders to fill and I'm getting married-n-stuff this Summer. Have fun with Dave at the Eugene show - you guys are like peas and carrots.

Peas and carrots. We aren't the ones getting married. :D What brought that on? Life as you have known it will never be the same. I wish you the best!

Besides worrying about my daughter and her family in Tokyo we had a heck of a wind storm yesterday afternoon that brought down several trees that landed on the cattle fence which in turn created a roundup and then tree removal yesterday and today. I was able to get this knife ready to epoxy. I'll take a closer look at it before I do that after I get rested up some.

Cool Ray! Looks like you managed the handle shortening just fine. We KNEW you would! I'm sure loving your leather work.
