I find a knife I own in 1085(bark river bowie)holding an edge and performing better than all other knives I own in same and other steels.Toughness and ease of sharpening make it my favorite steel, and it gets hair splitting very easily and cuts forever! Could it be a heat treatment that is a big factor in its performance because i have knives in 1095,154cm,vg10,1075,that do not perform nearly as well as 1085 regarding edge holding and toughness!

I suppose it depends on what you cut as well, as I find it a little hard to believe that 1085 would outlast 154CM on say, rope or cardboard. But then again, the convex grind might also help with edge retention.

I'd disagree on that. Granted the knife is being properly used vs. abused, it does matter what you cut, especially with the low alloy, very low wear resistant steel like 1085.
