I bought a old timer junior thinking it was an nib us made knife but the knife is made in china. my question is did taylor brands ever make a high carbon old timer? the box and site both list it as "high carbon steel". I bought if form amazon.

Lots of vendors and manufacturers cite a variety of run of the mill stainless steels as "high carbon" even when the carbon content is .5% or below. There doesn't appear to be any kind of standard for these descriptions, unfortunately.

The bottom line is whether or not the steel and heat treat used gets the intended job done satisfactorily. (Beyond the country of origin if that is an issue. For some it is, for some it's not. For the purposes of this forum it's all about the knives.)

I could be wrong, but I believe the Taylor Brand OTs are all Stainless Steel. SS can have a high percentage of carbon steel in it, but I believe it is SS.

You have learned a lesson that I had to. I did it with a Smith and Wesson knife I bought. It was a cheap lesson learned and the $25 I paid was not an issue. I thought it was made in USA. I was shocked to learn that it was a China manu. knife. The seller listed Smith and Wesson, an American Tradition, yada yada yada.... I felt duped. So, no big deal, now you know that you need to check further.

I know you are not the only one that has done it... No not me :D

If you go to the Schrade subforum in the manufacturers section, you will find all the tips you could ever want, so that doesn't happen to you again.

When in doubt, ask

what confused me was the page listing the knife states the blade is high carbon steel, no stainless mentioned, and as a discontinued item. I be getting a carbon steel boker and use the 108ot as one of my edc blades. I mainly wanted a carbon old timer because my brother gave me one with a broke main blade and i liked the looked & fill of it.
