I decided to try something new today on a 1095 blade. I used straight antifreeze, it worked out pretty well. There was no flare-up or flames like oils and the blade came out almost as clean as when it went in the forge .The scale stayed in the antifreeze and fell off real quick. the blade passed the file test with flying colors. I have a couple of O-1 blades to try, anyone try this ?

Depending on which antifreeze you used, the steam vapors may be quite toxic.Be careful!

Anti-freeze was in house brand from auto shop.(cheap) I used a small fan to push vapors away from my work area (outside)

I can't quote a source but I immediately thought the same thing, very toxic fumes....You might do a search for the MSDS sheet, it's probably on the web somewhere.

I already knew it was dangerous stuff, but I,ve been wondering for quite a while about it's quenching properties and also not having the neighbors ask "what the hell are you burning over there ?". I'm in kind of close quarters here.

Another thing, cats love it! Then later succumb to its effects. I've never thought about quenching properties though. Sounds to me it's to dangerous to do much experimenting with. Of course I recall the picture of Benjamin Franklin, holding a kite string and touching a metal key, during a thunderstorm :o)

Actually,Ben Franklin was not credited with the kite , key,and lightening thing until years later.According to his notes what he detected was a static build up in the clouds, not an actual lightening strike. After 200 years of this tale being told, everyone thinks it was a lightening bolt.Same thing with Noah being in the ark for 40 days. The Bible says it floated for about 400 days, but the story has been told wrong for so long that no one remembers it right.

Thanks for all the concern but I had to satisfy my curiousity after wondering for a long time. After 50 years on this planet I wouldn't intentially try to hurt myself...or anyone else. Even kitties.I'm always trying to stay one step ahead of my neighbors.Like rolling a rock uphill.
