I was just curious as to which one you would choose if you had to choose one. I am biased but it is 1095 just by a hair for me because I cut a lot of cardboard and have mediocore sharpening skills. What about you??

D-2 will hold an edge much better. 1095 is better for chopping, prying etc, but D-2 is far superior for cutting.

Me? If my sharpening skills were mediocre (and they probably are), I wouldn;t even touch D2. The 1095 will stay sharp as long as you need it, but I bet you knew that.

I agree. And D-2 isnt that hard to sharpen as long as you use a diamond or ceramic sharpener.,,,VWB.

1095 for me...it's totally boring, and without glamour of any sort, but good 1095 is probably the best all around doomsday steel you could ask for.

I've had 2 rat 3's, one in D2 and the other in 1095. the D2 didn't stay the 1095 will be pried from my cold, dead hand. I really like it even though D2 is probably the better steel. but i also like AUS 8 so you can't go by me.

I have both and I can sharpen both. But I really like 1095. I like how the edge can be honed very fine and smooth. I really like how it takes a sweet looking patina. I like that it's not brittle at all. It's easily sharpened under primitive conditions. It's wonderfully durable. The D2 will hold an edge really well, but it's just not as interesting to me as a well heat treated 1095.

When I got my "Mike Snody design" :) Activator Plus I was a bit worried at first because my stones would not sharpen the D2. So, I ordered the DMT course, fine & ultra fine diamond stones. (Note: I have not had to open the course stone.) I do love my 1095's & putting a beautiful edge on them. However, by using the fine, then ultra fine, then a bit of leather stropping, this D2 blade is VERY SHARP!! I carry it (and use it!) every day at work. Holds a shaveing sharp edge much longer than anything else I own.

I like 1095 better for many of the reasons already stated. I for whatever reason cannot stand D2. It feels and looks like a sharpened rock more than steel to me. I am not knocking anyone who favors this steel and from what I have read and heard it is a good steel. I do not own any D2 so I cannot speak on the quality myself, but every D2 knife I pick up I just cringe a little. I have knives in 1095 and I am completely satisfied with their performance. But I know that Bob Dozier a respected knife maker uses D2 and many people can testify to their durability and quality perfomance. Just my .02 cents worth.
