I notice when I order a length of 1095 the ends are painted yellow..Is this an industry marking for steel type? I haven't ordered many other types but I do know they are sprayed different colors...Was just wondering if I was someplace where they sold steel but didn't say what type it was if the colored ends would be a safe way to identify it.??

usually an internal company method of designating steel types. It will vary from company to company. There is no "International standard" so it's unlikely that steel painted with yellow ends will always be 1095 (unless you only buy from one company).

The 1095 I bought from Jantz wasn't painted, it had a printed label on the surface of the bar stock with the pertinent info on it. The 1084 I bought from Aldo was painted as you describe.

Aldo uses different paint colors and color combinations to identify the different steels. He puts it on (IIRC), so it's not a standard anywhere outside of his place, as far as I know.
