Hello all, I have a question about a large stash of 1095 shim stock,
is there any way of finding out weather they have been heat treated
and or tempered. Also whats the best way to clean the surface.

All help is welcome. :D

Ifthis post is in wrong area sorry in advance.. :barf:

An easy way to find out if it is hardened is to try to break a piece of it. If it snaps easy and clean it is hardened, and if it just bends over it is probably not hardened. Although if it has a spring temper, you could still be able to bend it with out it snaping. I think spring temper on 1095 is in the range of 41 to 47 HRC. You could also try drilling it and see how bad it tears up your drill bits.

As for cleaning it, I am not sure. How thick is it and how much rust is on it?

If it's real thin, or would be before grinding the rust off, it'd make great damascus material. If it's got real deep pits and is aready real thin, it may only be good for scrap or practice heat treating.
