Hi Guys, did a heat treatment on a couple of 1095 blades today. Upon shoving them in my tempering facility (the kitchen oven) the glass in the oven door decided to smash all over the place. Im pretty certain it was unrelated to the heat treating of my knives (now the other half is convinced the knives did it!) but now I have some heat treated blades that got about half an hour of temper at 400f before the oven died.

How do i proceed with these blades?

many thanks

Dave

Get them into any oven or kiln to finish as Asap
Can't help you with the wife tho

A toaster oven would work as long as your pieces aren’t huge

The good news is that with 30 minutes, the blades are probably stable, but you should do the complete the tempering done again as soon as you can. Use a neighbors oven.

These blades haven't seen an oven in a couple days and probably wont for a good few more. Will they need reheating and quenching again or is it best to proceed with the temper

No, just temper them when you can. The biggest risk with 1095 on a delayed temper is the blade cracking due to internal stress. Your short temper probably took care of that. Surely you have a neighbor or friend who will bake them at 400F for an hour for you?

Ok cheers! In NZ nobody talks to anybody so I don't really know my neighbors! :D

He could be grounded for breaking the oven glass
