ok i'm hesitant to even ask because sometimes these types of threads can get a little ugly, and off on tangents. but i am going to ask anyhow and hope for the best.

if all things being equal such a same blade shape, geometry, and the correct heat treat done on two identical blades one from 1095, and the other from 1084 will there be in practical differences in performance? has anyone tested this?

and does it matter for blade size? if we use three basic sizes/intended use blades such as a small skinning knife, medium sized camp/survival/combat type blade and a chopper, do either one of these steels excel in a comparison based on use?

again folks i'm not looking for a "my steel beats up your steel' thing. i'm just looking to expand my knowledge and i suck at science

any help would be great

thanks

We have used a lot of both and have been using a lot of 1084..I dont think you wil notice any real world difference in the two to be honest..1084 is much easier to heat treat correctly as well//You'll get a better blade heat treating 1084 with a forge and canola oil than you will from 1095..1095 really needs a soak and faster oil for optimum performance..1084 is more forgiving..
Id like to add that Im almost afraid that 1084 is getting a bum rap as a "begginers" steel as of late as if thats a bad thing..Some folks are taking the term "begginers steel" in the wrong way. As if it denotes a lesser grade of steel..Nothing could be furher from the truth..Its a great steel..

Both steels ideally heat treated, the average person would never know the difference, methinks.
