Hi Guys...was hoping for some input on the steel in the Old Hickory 14" butcher knife/ machete Vs the Ontario machetes.

I will be buying one of these as a small project with the aim of cutting down the blade and using the off cut to make a small knife.

With this in mind does anyone have any comments on the steel in the OH or the 22" machete to repurpose into a knife blade?

I'm wildly guessing the 22" machete will be at a lower hardness than the shorter OH?

Strike back ...

Just as a point of reference the SpecPlus non military contract knives moved to 1075....the SpecPlus Gen 2 remains 5160

I hope these machetes are still 1095, the SP Line has moved to 1075.

"Our Military contract knives still will use 1095 but any knife/tool that is not under specification has been changed to 1075."

Thanks for the clarification. I’m pretty bummed out about this. I really love my Spec Plus in 1095. I might give the 1075 a try though. I’m thinking about getting the SP10, might buy an older stamped one and hope it’s 1095 or try the 1075.

What do you like about 1095 over 1075?

If given a choice I'd sooner go with a machete in 1075 instead of 1095. If a knife tends to stay sharp and isn't a pain to resharpen, I'm not too picky on what ingredients they used to make it.

I trust the people at OKC who made the change to what is better all around for the customer and their products. I guess they did A LOT of research and thought in to making the switch.

I just wish the OKC marketing team would keep up with the technical side...

On the website all the SP and non mil machetes are still listed as 1095...

A lot of places don't up date as well, one place I had to ask wait a few days to see what the woodsman's steel was, they confirmed 420 on it even though it said 5160 on their site, the CS rep said they would tell marketing, the day my knife shipped the info changed, and the knife was sold out. they might get a lot of angry returns because of that.

I can understand resellers not being fast on the uptake, especially when it's a current model etc....but the manufacturer? They should have that updated asap...let alone 2 to 3 years down the track.

Does anyone know how many Ontario machete are mil-spec? I thought there was one, an 18” model, but I saw that they had 2 models and I was wondering if both were.
