I just bought a chopper made from 1095FG. I did some searching, but couldn't find out how this steel is different than plain old 1095. Anyone have information on this version of 1095? What are the benefits?

Thanks in advance!

Unless I am completely wrong, I think that the FG stands for flat ground. it should not make a difference.

Gotcha, I thought it might stand for fine grain since I saw that term used somewhere else before, but I wasn't sure. Thanks.

the fineness of the grain is determined by HT usually, but it could be different. I might be wrong. I don't know.

If I recall, Aldo sold some 1084 that he called 1084FG because it had vandalium in it, which refined the grain even more, so he called it fine grain

I understand. It's not an official designation from the foundry but was named that by Aldo. Yes, vanadium in small amounts helps retard growth of grain structure/ carbides helping toughness. I'll tell you, if it performs as well as it looks in that link it should be a great knife. Nice hamon, wonderful work!.
