Alrigh, I'm sure this has been covered before, but my google-fu is weak, and I can't seem to find a direct answer regarding the two. Which steel has better corrosion resistance? From what I've read, A-2 is better, but I figured I'd ask. I'm looking to order a Landi MPS and set it up as a neck knife, and an A-2 steel upgrade is only $10 extra. Being around my neck, a little extra corrosion resistance would be nice. Thanks for any input:thumbup:

i think A2 is slightly better. but that is just an opinion.

IIRC, A2 has about 6% chromium which makes it somewhat corrosion resistant.

It's definitely more corrosion resistant than 1095.

A2 is a great blade steel.

A2 = some
1095 = none

1095 ranks up there right under O1 for "look at it and it rusts"...LOL

A2 is definitely much better.

But it's nowhere near as good as D2....which is nowhere near as good as a stainless steel....which is nowhere near as good as a non-carbon stainless steel.

I was beat to the punch, but 1095 rusts faster than any other steel I own. If I look at it wrong, it rusts.

Thanks for the info guys. 154CM is another $5 over the A-2 upgrade, I might consider that, but I haven't heard a bad thing about A-2, so I'll probably stick with it.

154CM will have more corrosion and wear resistance, and the A2 will have more toughness, at around 60 Rc each.

A2 is a tool steel and it resists corrosion better than 1095. Chris Reeve uses it in his one piece hollow handled knives. I have several knives that utilize A2 as a blade steel and never had any problems with them rusting.

For a neck knife, where sweat can cause almost instant corrosion, 154cm would likely be a great choice. For your stated use it seems the best option as the other two are likely tougher then you need and you can benefit from having a high end stainless.

A-2 is tough, and fairly corrosion resistant.

D-2 is FAR more corrossion resistant.

A-2 is tough, but doesn't hold an edge very well.

D-2 is less tough, but holds an edge forever.

Bottom line, D-2 is a much better steel for most applications.

A-2 is tough but doesn't hold an edge very well? Then how come people rave about their Bark River knives staying shaving sharp... even after much hard use?

Ben has a crush on D2. I've read his posts about his use habits and understand why. He has said he likes to trek (and hunt) for a couple of weeks in the wild without touching up the blade. D2 will do that, A2 not. But if you will touch up the blade occasionally, A2 works nicely. Ben applies his use habits to his evaluations of all steels. Not wrong, just unique.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still undecided. I'll decide on A2, and say that I can live with a little extra maintenance, but then I think about having much less to worry about with 154cm. I don't have any blades in A2, and I've been jonesing for one for a while, but we'll see where I end up.

D2 isn't an option. That said, I would like to get a knife in D2 at some point. Probably something I'll use as a dedicated hunting knife.

A2 is a very good tool steel and holds an edge, no problem (unless the heat treatment is screwed up). It's easier to sharpen than the 154cm. I have knives made of A2 steel and I am very happy with its performance.
