fwiw - there is a 1095 variant that is actually better than the standard - http://www.zknives.com/knives/steels/1095cv.shtml
1095cv or 1095crovan (used by kabar often)

the addition of Vanadium helps refine the grain size

Their both carbon steels, the hc is just acknowledging that it is indeed a carbon steel.

Yup!!!! Adding more letters to something mediocre can make it seem more appealing. The Chinese must have discovered this little trick and developed their own alphabet steels.

I have always wondered why the industry has gone this route and added letters at the end opposed to the hardness. 1095 HC does not mean as much as 1095/62RH would......
