Once I get a new Becker in 1095cv I put a nice convex bevel on it with a WorkSharp belt sharpener with the supplied 3 grits...

...and then whenever it stops slicing paper like a lazer... I simply strop it 10-14x with green compound and it's back to a rediculously high sharpness again .

I then apply a thin film of coconut oil on the edge and voila, a low-maintenance light-saber!:D

So straight forward and fast! No need to spend hours sweating over 5-6 stones doing anything manually or worrying about angles and micro-bevels.

Hmmmm.....a Coconut flavoUred Becker....

Didn't expect this to be required... However...

Public Service Announcement:
DO NOT lick the freshly-stropped, coconut oiled edge of a Becker!:eek::eek:

Disclaimer: this advice pertains explicitly to Becker knives. Other knife brands may vary. Please see their specific subforums for pertinent blade licking guidance.

I can usually keep 1095 fly-guttin' sharp by stropping, unless I get a ding, nick or a roll on the edge. Then I'll just hit it on the stones for a few minutes and that ding, nick or roll is gone!

I actually had an edge roll when my wife asked me to cut the stem of the plastic flower with my BK14...

Turns out there was a 1mm thick metal wire in there and I sawed it up and down the blade a few times before I figured that out...:rolleyes:

90% was stropped out the first time
The next time I needed to freshen up the edge, the remaining 10% was gone .

I chipped my seax-niner cutting saplings on some stones in my parent's yard last Sunday..... I impulsively rubbed it on a diamond file.
I'm surprised how fast they disappeared!
It's toothy now, but that's ok. :)

Forgot to mention how cool the sparks were as I was chopping stones....
Ugh!

Exactly! My only 1095 cro-van is my BK-9 and I’ve accidentally nicked and rolled her edge more than a few times hitting stones, staples, probably knots etc. But I only use her as a chopper, so I basically just do a super quick touch up on the fine ceramic to hone the non-nicked areas and then ignore the nicks.

She sees so much use that I always know she’s going To be sharpened soonish anyways, so I don’t ever really worry about the tiny dings because by the 2nd or 3rd routine touch on the fine diamond, she’s beard-shaving-sharp again and super uniformed along the edge. Even after years of this terrible treatment, I’m positive that I haven’t even worn back the factory secondary bevel yet. Well, I’m sure I have on a microscopic level, but there’s no noticeable re-profiling of the bevel or cutting edge whatsoever. Of course that’s probably because I’m mostly chopping softer Florida vegetation.

Speaking of which, homegirl needs another little touch-up, getting a little too toothy.

Still surprised how well my experimental quadruple vinegar black patina has held up so far. Much more durable than any other “black coating” I’ve encountered on a hard use blade.

I’m a 1095 cro van fan for life. I honestly can’t say that about any other hard use steel that I’ve abused...

[Edit] that worn part near the guard/scales isn’t even the area I use the most. I almost entirely use the “sweet spot” of the blade for chopping - no real batoning or carving etc. Im convinced that the patina just didn’t “stick” that well in that area because I used a long tube shaped can for the vinegar soak and that section wasn’t completely submerged.
