I've stripped and polished the blade on a bk11 and wanted to know the true rust resistance. I know it's. carbon steel and all that but does this mean I have to just cover it in oil constantly? I live in eastern Oklahoma and the humidity level is on the low side. I'd just like to know how often you guys oil and how much. Thanks.

it'll be fine -- if you're REALLY worried about it, give it a coat of paste wax and polish it back up.

I have a vinegar patina on my bk7- happy to take and post pix if you want to see how the patina looks. It does help w rust resistance!

Patinas can be removed, with a little elbow grease.

I live in missouri and I don't ever really oil my blades. I keep them rotated pretty good, don't put them away wet, and if a patina starts to show on the edge I just strop it really quick to get rid of it.

Seeing pictures might just give me the kick in the pants I need to get it, and they'd be much appreciated.

These were done with boiled white vinegar. Bring it up to the boil, pour it into a pan or tray, leave it for about 15 mins a side and then lightly sand it with some steel wool. Repeat again about 3 to 4 times and you should end up with a very matte grey, almost sandblasted look.

Hey thanks, but when I sanded the top spine, didn't get it very square, ended up going about 3/8" back on the spine before I decided to that it want going to be perfect. Rest of the handle finish is intact and I have the new laser etched version which means if I sand it down the whole handle the markings go away. This is all just a fancy way of askin how do I patina the short spot on the spine? Will soaking the coating discolor or damage it?
