This is the first big non kitchen knife I’ve done in a few years. I started this project back in 2013, iirc, inspired by a Jerry Fisk piece. Not comparing my work to his in any way of course. I lost interest in the project as I bought the steel to try to get a Hamon, when Aldo’s W2 was recalled. I got nothing. This one is made of 80crv2, has a hardened 1075 s-Guard, and a black dyed curly maple handle, with ivory g-10 spacer. I have a friend who is Scottish, and he fell in love with it, so I finished it up for him.

I just finished up the sheath, something I still need a lot of practise at. It’s functional, and looks ok across the room. I make mostly kitchen knives, so my sheath making is falling way behind.

The blade is heat treated to Rc60, and I took it to 0.020” before sharpening. The raised clip was taken to a zero edge, but not sharpened. The customer will decide how sharp he wants it.

Comments and feedback welcome.

That looks fantastic! But why is the guard so long, for defense or offense? Haven't seen one that long before.

Looks awesome willie! I’m loving the guard, it looks great on that piece especially with the black curly maple

Thanks! I was going to do a d-guard welded to the s-guard, but this looked right, so I left it. The proportions flow nicely to my eye at least.

I like your choice of leaving it. It’s different. And at least to me looks more elegant then a D guard

Nice, stylish piece Warren. I just wonder about the practicality of such a long guard. How does it feel when wearing the knife? Does the guard bump your arm or poke you in the side while moving around?

Surprisingly, it doesn’t get in the way. It is less restrictive than a d guard, or ring guard. I played around with it a lot to assess that exact issue, and it was unobtrusive.

Very nice looking knife and sheath Warren. I like the long guard on it, kind of reminds me of the Civil war era knives, nice job on the sheath also.

I thought I would post my inspiration for this knife.

The inspiration these guys provide is phenomenal. I was originally going to do the d-Guard with the weld at the but end, swooping backward into long s-Guard. I never did the last piece, as I liked it like this.
