11 Gorkha Rifles in combat

This might be of interest to some of you. It is a report about an action being fought by a battalion of the 11th Gorkha Rifles, Indian Army in the Kargil Front, Kashmir. I picked it up from an Indian Army News update:

In the Batalik Sector, in an exceptionally gallant operation, the troops of a battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles have captured Khalubar, a very dominating feature, on night 05/06 July 1999. As per the last reports received from the troops in contact, 43 enemy Sangars have been cleared in the area and the troops have advanced further Northwards, where fierce fighting is going on at present. This operation was personally led by Col. Lalit Rai, the Commanding Officer of the battalion, who despite being wounded on 04 July 1999, has refused to be evacuated. In this operation, 23 enemy soldiers have been killed and three of our soldiers have made the supeme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army. In addition, during the mopping up operations, so far, two heavy weapons viz, 12.7 mm KPVT and 14.5 mm KPVT have been recovered along with quantity of ammunition and documents belonging to 5 Northern Light Infantry. Further, the enemy has also left behind 11 dead bodies dumped in a shallow pit in this area.
*******************

This news being from the Indian Army, stuff like "...supreme sacrifice ... gallant traditions ..." etc. are to be expected. The 5 Northern Light Infantry is a Pakistan Army outfit skilled in high mountain warfare.

The 11th Gorkha Rifles recruit primarily from the eastern Nepalese Rai and Limbu tribes. The Sirupati is the preferred style of khukuri among these easterners. So, those of you owning Sirupatis can be pretty sure that similar khukuris are dangling on the hips of folks going into battle probably right at this very moment.

Thanks, Nephew. As I have often commented that area is going to be a problem forever it looks like.

Thanks for the update Sonam. I have been trying to follow this war as much as I can but the newspapers give it next to no coverage. The occasional AP wire tucked away deep inside the paper is all! You would think that when 2 nuclear powers are slugging it out the world would take notice and show some interest. I guess that the USA has no monetary interests in the region otherwise I'm sure we'd be sending in bombers and "peacekeepers".

If you have the time I'd like to hear some of the history of this region and why is being contested over now.

Mike

Sonam can deal with the history and I'll deal with the present. Both India and Pakistan lay claim to the Kashmir and are willing to fight for it. If these countries are foolish enough and go far enough it could lead to a nuclear exchange and I don't think anybody anywhere wants to see that.

Sonam, Pakcik Bill & other forumites;

It is an irony ~ Gurkhas are helping Ethnic Albanian (mostly Moslem) in Europe but another Gurkhas are attacking Ethnic Kashmiri (also mostly Moslem) in Indian sub-continent !

Somehow if UN decide to interfere ~ who knows that London might send his 1st Gurkha Rifles to help Ethnic Kashmiri ~ then 1st Gurkha Rifles has to face 11th Gurkha Rifles !!!

I reserve my comments ! Anyhow I would like to bring all the forumites to some news (dated from 1/7 to 7/7 in descending order) which I received daily via email directly from Kashmir.

KASHMIR - ANOTHER KOSOVO? ANOTHER BOSNIA?
Occupied Kashmir, the beautiful valley, where for long time India is playing a game of fire and blood is now presenting a picture of collective ethnic cleansing of Kashmiris at the hands of oppressive Indian Occupation forces. Kashmir has been a victim of continuous suppression by the Occupied Indian army for the last 52 years. This year, till February its army strength has risen to 700,000 which is the largest military concentration in the world. In Indian Occupied Kashmir, during the last six weeks, India increased this strength further by sending five more infantry divisions, five independent mountain brigades and 40 battalions of para-military forces. The presence of more than 700,000 troops to maintain control over a population of 13million Kashmiris, points to the fact that India wants to keep its occupation of Kashmir solely by military forces. India, after failing to terrorize innocent Kashmiri people is opting for ethnic cleansing. India till now has martyred 70,000 innocent Kashmir and has made more than 40,000youth amputated as a result of torture tactics. Several thousands women have been dishonored. At certain places many people are made to stand and shot point blank. Similarly, a village after a village has been burned down. Only recently, a village Bandipura near Srinagar was reduced to ashes by the Indian army. After this inhuman act, there is not a single building left worth living. The killing of 18 relatives of Mujahideen few days ago in the village of Sirankot is a clear sign of Indian forces' confusion, utter desperation and failure. Despite the presence of more than 700,000 Indian troops in Indian Occupied Kashmir, Indian forces are still demanding more power under the Armed Forces Special Act. Its aim is none other than cleansing of Kashmiri people. The Kashmir problem has been on the United Nations agenda over 50 years. These moments in Occupied Kashmir are like that of Bosnia and Kosovo. International community should increase pressure on India to bring about a just and durable solution so that the people of Indian Occupied Kashmir could decide about their future in a free and peaceful manner. Only in this way, the beautiful valley of Indian Occupied Kashmir can be saved from becoming a Bosnia and Kosovo.
