I found this photo on another forum and was wondering if anyone here has tried this? If yes, does the knife stay in place?

Looks interessting, indeed.

But I wouldn´t carry it that way. It seems, at looks out the whole buttside and even more, when sitting or driving it would slip out of that "sheath". I, personally, wouldn´t do that.

I prefer the nice leather sheath by Buck; that´s the only way to carry this original knife. (at least, imo)

I do something very similar to this. I learned of the idea from Cliff Jacobson's books on (canoe) camping. He suggested the variant I use as they way he carried his Schrade 6OT, which is similar in size and shape to the Buck 110.

I run a seam up the center of my LRP on my jeans (all I wear) and running about 2/3 of the way up. This essentially splits the pocket into 2 tall thin pockets.

I usually carry my cell phone in the outer vertical pocket and it doesn't interfere with sitting in my car in or any chair. I'll carry a full size multi-tool or a larger lockback in the inner pocket when working around the property sometimes and I do notice the knife/tool there when sitting.

I hate belt holsters of any size for any thing. Just a personal preference thing.

I much prefer a deeper carry in the rear pocket than the picture you've shown. Keeps things nice and concealed and less risk of accidental pocket ejection.

Note, this trick works well for normal rear pants pockets too. Just run the seam up the middle of the pocket liner.

If there's huge interest, I can post pictures of my method (stolen from Jacobsen's books).

Pinnah; I would be interessted to see your solution. But did it ever fall/fell off your pocket while sitting/driving? The question may sound stupid as the whole knife construction on the 110/112 is very slippy. Many modern materials (G10, Micarta etc etc) will provide more grippy material.

Don´t get me wrong, but I have to change my position many times a day. Be it sitting, standing up a chair, sitting in the car and driving etc etc. and a slippy knife...
But you said you prefer a deeper carry, so I´d like to see a pic of your jeans (strange, isn´t it?!).

But I agree that a belt sheath can cause strange views or stupid questions.

pinnah,

I assume if sewn all the way up, it would be too difficult to retrieve the knife. True?

If it isn't too much trouble, I would like to see a photo as well. I think I like your set up better where the knife doesn't show and is more secure deeper in the pocket.

Humpa and TAH, here are the pictures. TAH, you're right. I don't stitch the pocket all the way. I keep the pocket height so that at least the top 1" of the shortest knife/tool/phone sticks up above the seam, so that I can more easily grab it.

Here is the basic seam. The jeans are Wrangler Carpenter pants, which is essentially the primary pants I wear. The seam that I've added runs vertically from the bottom of the pocket to the the horizontal seam of the pocket. I bar tacked the top of the seam for durability (just run the sewing machine back and forth a few times).

Here is the pocket with my (decidedly old fashion) cell phone and a big lock back (I happened to have my Schrade 51OT with me). You can see that the phone and knife are both about an inch above the seam of the divider.

Here is the pocket with both the phone and the 51OT in the pocket so you can get a sense of the imprinting.

I've been carrying my cell phone like this for about 5 years when I ditched the cell phone holster (which I hate and which was destroying my belt, my pants and jackets). For day to day activities like getting in and out of cars, moving about the house or office, sitting, standing and moving about, I've not had any problem with with pocket ejects.

I have low back issues and do a lot of floor exercises and stretching and I will get pocket ejects when laying prone on the floor. The same thing will happen if I have to crawl under a car on my back or some such.

With the 110, I would consider making the pocket a bit off center and thus narrower. I would also keep an eye on pocket wear. IME, denim and canvas (canvas like Carhart is worse) wears from repeated folds in the material so something like a squared bolstered 110 or 112 can wear out a pocket in the same way a snuff can will (I don't chew, just noting it).

Hope this helps.

Excellent tutorial, pinnah. Thank you. Your seam is hardly noticable. I'm going to try it, but like you suggested, move the seam off-center for a tighter fit.

Thanks for taking the time and the explanation. It makes more sense how it works for you. Now I understand, as you don´t let it look out of the BP.
I don´t know if I would try it in future. But it is good to hear from a first-perspective and opinion.

Great pics :)
